The White House has come under fire from members or the news media, including liberal commentators, for its decision to treat Fox News as "an opponent."
CNN Political Analyst David Gergen called the decision "a risky strategy, and it's not one that I would advocate."
While some liberals are supporting the White House, John Nichols of the left-wing opinion magazine The Nation, took a dim view of Obama administration's actions.
"There's a word for what the president and his aides are doing," Nichols wrote. "That word is 'whining.' And nothing... does more damage to Obama's credibility or authority than the sense that a popular president is becoming the Whiner-in-Chief."
Baltimore Sun Reporter David Zurawik, who is also not a fan of Fox News, concurred.
"This campaign by the Obama administration is dangerous to press freedom, and it should concern everyone in the press, not just Fox," he said. "You have to wonder who else is on this administration's enemies list."
