Up to $9.5 million in federal stimulus money went to 13 zip codes in Virginia that do not exist or are in other states.
According to the Washington Examiner, Old Dominion Watchdog reports that the fake zip codes were listed on the government Web site, Recovery.gov, that tracks the spending of stimulus money.
Other states found similar errors. Nearly $650,000 was reported as going to six incorrect New Mexico zip codes, while in West Virginia, four reported zip codes aren't real, and three are in Virginia.
It is the latest embarrassment for the Obama administration's stimulus program.
The government says the confusion came from fund recipients who did not know the identity of their congressman.
