Americans' Faith in Government Hits 36-Year Low

A recent poll shows that it's not the political system that most Americans blame for current problems facing the U.S., but politicians themselves.

According to the latest ABC News/Yahoo News poll, government approval ratings by the American public are at a 36-year low.

The survey shows 74 percent of Americans blame the people in office, while just 24 percent blame the system.

The poll's results bode ill for Democratic incumbents in next week's midterm elections. Researchers predict a huge voter turnout and a Republican take-over of Congress.
However, they say Americans are not so much voting for the GOP as they are voting against the current politicians on Capitol Hill.

The survey was conducted Oct. 13-20, 2010 among a random national sample of 1,025 adults, with a 4-point margin of error.
