Gingrich New Target at Top of GOP Pack

Newt Gingrich has surged to the front of the Republican presidential candidate pack, but can he overcome the attacks that have taken down previous frontrunners?

With less than four weeks until Iowa caucus voters cast the first votes, Gingrich is pulling away from the other GOP presidential hopefuls and taking a strong lead.

A new Gallop poll puts Gingrich at the top of the field with 37 percent of the Republican vote. Mitt Romney is second with 22 percent.

But as other frontrunners have found out, the top is not always a safe place to be.

The Republican candidates are known for their vicious attacks on each other and attacks against Gingrich are increasing.

Ron Paul's new television commercial against the former House speaker began running on Fox News in Iowa on Wednesday.

"When he (Gingrich) was in the House, he went the other way. When he got paid, he'd go the other way," the commercial claims.

Other conservatives are turning up the pressure as well. Talk show host Glenn Beck asked Gingrich some tough questions on his show Tuesday on the GBTV cable channel.

"You are for the individual mandate for healthcare and you have been for quite some time," Beck told Gingrich.

"I've said consistently we ought to have some requirement to either have health insurance, or you post a bond or in some way you indicate you are going to be held accountable," Gingrich said, adding that his stance was a "variation" on the individual mandate.

If the the polls are any indication, Iowa Republicans are beginning to think Gingrich is the best candidate to take on President Obama next November.

Obama's campaign is watching.

"A lot of people inside the Beltway and outside the Beltway woke up today to a very different political environment and one in which Newt Gingrich is very much for real," former White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told CBS' "Face The Nation."
