Tenn. Lawmaker Retracts Nazi Comments

Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., has apologized for comparing Republican tactics against the health care law to those of the Nazis.

"The Germans said enough about the Jews and people believe it -- believed it and you had the Holocaust," Cohen said on the House floor Tuesday. "We heard on this floor (about) government takeover of health care. There is no government takeover."

Cohen issued a statement Thursday, stating he never meant to offend anyone with his comments.

"I want to be clear that I never called Republicans Nazis," he said. "I regret that anyone in the Jewish community, my Republican colleagues or anyone else was offended by the portrayal of my comments."

Cohen said he was disappointed that his comments were taken out of context and caused a distraction from the health care reform debate.

"It is my hope that we can return our focus to the matter at hand - health care for 32 million Americans," he added.
