The Obama administration deported a record number of criminal immigrants last year,
Nearly half of the 393,000 immigrants deported were considered criminals.
Research by The Associated Press shows an increasing number of immigrants are being deported for traffic or immigration violations, drunk driving, and other drug-related crimes.
Last year, nearly three times the number of immigrants were deported for traffic-related offenses than two years earlier.
According to the AP, the statistics raise questions about President Obama's frequent statement that his administration has focused on the "worst of the worst" criminal offenders and not on "folks who are looking to scrape together an income."
In his bid for re-election, the president touts the record number of deportations as a reflection of his tough stance against criminal elements while assuring Hispanic voters that he is working on comprehensive immigration reform.
Out of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the country, seven to eight million are adults.
