White House Press Secretary Jay Carney made a blunder of biblical proportions Tuesday in explaining a statement President Obama made during his jobs speech.
The president had urged lawmakers Tuesday to focus on jobs legislation rather than bills such as the one reaffirming the nation's 'In God We Trust' motto.
"I trust in God, but God wants to see us help ourselves by putting people back to work," Obama said.
Referencing those remarks, Carney said, "I believe that the phrase from the Bible is 'the Lord helps those who help themselves.'"
But someone pointed out that the popular statement is not scriptural.
The White House later issued the disclaimer that the phrase does not appear in the Bible.
