When Mitt Romney speaks on the campaign trail he usually gets the most applause when he talks about people's God-given rights.
Texas Senate candidate Ted Cruz told CBN News's David Brody that the response should be expected because America was formed around that belief.
"The most fundamental insight our framers had in Philadelphia in crafting the Constitution was to understand that government doesn't give us our rights," Cruz said. "We are endowed, as the Declaration says, by our Creator with unalienable rights."
"And the job of government is to protect those rights and the only way to protect those rights is to limit government," he continued. "As Thomas Jefferson put it, 'The Constitution serves as chains to bind the mischief of government.'"
Cruz said that insight that God gave humans their rights is "the American miracle."
