GOP Rejects Gay Marriage, Abortion in Platform

Social conservatives are hailing the Republican Party platform for its firm stand against abortion and gay marriage.

The party approved its official document Tuesday at the convention in Tampa, Fla. It calls for bans on all abortions and gay marriages.

The platform affirms the rights of states and the federal government not to recognize same-sex marriage. It also backs a constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman.

CBN News Political Editor John Waage offered his analysis of Tuesday night's GOP convention on the CBN News Channel's Morning News, Aug. 29.

On abortion, the platform states that "the unborn child has a fundamental individual right to life which cannot be infringed."

It also opposes using public revenues to promote or perform abortion or to fund organizations that perform or advocate abortions.

It says the party will not fund or subsidize health care that includes abortion coverage.

Brian Brown, with the National Organization for Marriage, told CBN News the Democrats have taken such extreme positions backing same sex marriage and abortion, they may lose groups they think are solid Democratic voters.

"And I don't think the Democratic Party can continue to just simply take advantage and be nonchalant about the votes of African-Americans, blue-collar Catholics, Hispanics," Brown said.

"And the Republican Party, because of its platform, I think we've made very clear where we stand," he continued. "We stand on the side of defense of marriage and life."

Parties approve platforms at their conventions every four years. Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell headed up this year's GOP platform committee.

"This ambitious blueprint projects a sea change in the way that government works," McDonnell said.

The GOP platform covers many issues. For example, it calls for reshaping Medicare into a voucher-like program, and rejects federal spending as a way to heal the nation's ailing job market.

"It offers a solution for workers without jobs, families without savings, and neighborhoods without hope," McDonnell explained.

The party also backs constitutional amendments to balance the federal budget and require a super majority for any tax increases.
