Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., has been caught spreading rumors about Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney based on unverified information.
Reid stated in an interview this week with The Huffington Post that Romney didn't pay taxes for 10 years.
But The Washington Post reports Reid made that claim based on one phone call he received.
When Reid was pressed about his claim, he answered, "Now, do I know that that's true? Well, I'm not certain.''
The Huffington Post still ran the story with Reid's accusations, even though it was just a rumor.
Democrats and the news media have been pressing Romney to release more than two years of tax records. Romney said that's all that McCain released in 2008, and he does not plan to release any more.
