President Obama's controversial selection for ambassador to the United Nations has been approved.

The Senate voted 87-10 Thursday to confirm Samantha Power to the post.

"As a long-time champion of human rights and dignity, she will be a fierce advocate for universal rights, fundamental freedoms, and U.S. national interests," Obama said in a written statement after the vote.

Power has been an outspoken critic of Israel, and some accuse her of anti-Semitism.

She said gay rights are central to America's global human rights agenda.
