The U.S. State Department is seeking to engage with faith communities across the globe in its efforts to promote U.S. foreign policy.

Secretary of State John Kerry is launching the new Office of Faith-based Community Initiatives Wednesday.

Shaun Casey, a professor of Christian ethics at Wesley Theological Seminary, will head the office and serve as special advisor on religious issues.

The State Department said the new office will work with faith communities on "development objectives" such as fighting poverty and promoting international religious freedom.
