Democratic lawmakers unveiled a new gun control measure before Congress Thursday.
The proposed legislation, authored by Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., would:
- Reinstate a ban on assault weapons.
- Outlaw the sale of select specialty firearms.
- Ban the sale of ammunition magazines with more than 10 rounds.
A similar law, also written by Feinstein, was allowed to expire in 2004 after Congress refused to renew it.
President Obama opted not to send his own bill to Capitol Hill and said he supports the new legislation.
However, there is little chance it will pass the Republican-led House. And it may not be able to get the votes it needs from the Senate either.
