A Senate panel approved a new bill Tuesday that would expand background checks for all gun buyers.
The measure, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., was supported by Democrats but opposed by every Republican.
Schumer said he hoped to strike a compromise on the measure with Republicans, which will help its chances of passing in the full Senate. He said he believes the measure will reduce gun crimes
But the top Republican on the panel, Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa., said the measure will ultimately lead to a federal registry of gun owners, which is illegal.
