Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., is trying to simplify the tax code.
Political and business leaders agree the code is complicated for individuals and too burdensome for businesses.
Baucus talked about his efforts as the Montana Jobs Summit opened Monday in Butte. Several thousand politicians, business people, and academics were in attendance.
"There is no question, if we can reform the code, it will help American competitiveness in the world," Baucus told the audience.
Business leaders agreed.
"If the people in this audience and the people of Montana and the people of the United State want to invigorate the American economy, there is a very straightforward path to do so," FedEx CEO Fred Smith said. "And that is get with Sen. Max Baucus and reform the tax code."
Joining Baucus in the effort on the House side is Rep. Dave Camp, R-Mich.
