Political donors can now donate money to as many candidates and parties as they want, thanks to a Supreme Court ruling.

In a 5 to 4 decision Wednesday, the high court ruled there should be no overall limit to political contributions.

House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, applauded the decision, saying "Donors ought to have the freedom to give what they want to give."

But Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., had a different reaction.

"It will increase the number of wealthy people who have a disproportionate effect on our political system," Schumer told reporters.

The court's move comes after Alabama businessman Shaun McCutcheon filed a lawsuit, calling the government's spending caps a violation of his First Amendment rights.

McCutcheon had given thousands of dollars in campaign contributions and wanted to give more.

Donors are still limited to the $2,600 maximum limit for congressional and presidential candidates.  But with no overall maximum limit, they can now give to as many candidates as they desire.
