Former IRS agents told lawmakers no progressive groups were targeted for extra scrutiny the way Tea Party groups were, according to a new report by the House Oversight Committee.

In the lead-up to the 2012 election, the IRS stonewalled Tea Party and other conservative groups as they tried to gain tax-exempt status.

But according to The Daily Caller, the congressional staff report contradicts claims by the White House and Democrats that some liberal groups were also targeted, saying there's no evidence to back that up.

"Only seven applications in the IRS backlog contained the word 'progressive,' all of which were then approved by the IRS, while Tea Party groups received unprecedented review and experienced years-long delays," the House Oversight Committee staff report states.

"While some liberal-oriented groups were singled out for scrutiny, evidence shows it was due to non-political reasons," the report says.
