The scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of Tea Party and other conservative groups has taken a major turn.

The group Judicial Watch announced the discovery of backups of former IRS official Lois Lerner's so-called "missing" emails.

"Department of Justice attorneys for the Internal Revenue Service told Judicial Watch on Friday that Lois Lerner's emails, indeed all government computer records, are backed up by the federal government in case of a government-wide catastrophe," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said.

Fitton also said those attorneys report it would be too difficult to find Lerner's emails.

However, he said they acknowledge the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration is looking into the matter.
