The Supreme Court has denied Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer's bid to keep so-called "Dreamers" from getting driver's licenses for now.

In 2012, President Barack Obama initiated a program called The DREAM Act. which allows children of illegal immigrants to stay and work in the United States.

Brewer is challenging that program in court, saying Dreamers aren't eligible under Arizona law to receive drivers' licenses.

The 9th Circuit Court of Appeals denied an appeal from the state and the case went to the U.S. Supreme Court. The justices were asked to keep licenses from being issued while the case continued. But they refused to issue a stay on ruling.

"This order is a big holiday gift to Dreamers and a lump of coal for Gov. Brewer," Jennifer Chang Newell, an attorney with the ACLU said.

Brewer told Capitol Media Services the case should continue to trial, citing states' rights.

However, Jan. 5 marks the beginning of a new governor term in Arizona, and Governor-elect Doug Ducey has not officially committed to seeing this issue through to trial.
