Obama: GOP to Blame for Looming Highway Crisis

President Barack Obama is blaming "the Republican Congress" for blocking highway construction and transit programs across the country.

The Federal Highway Trust Fund is getting low and will be on empty by the end of August, meaning states won't receive federal aid to help fix potholes, maintain bridges, and pay for other transit projects.

The president said he'll take executive action if Congress doesn't do something soon.

"As long as they insist on taking no action whatsoever to help anybody, I'm going to take action on behalf of the middle class," he said.

In 2009, Obama pushed through $800 billion in stimulus spending, and much of it was supposed to be used for infrastructure.

Nearly a dozen plans have been proposed to build the current fund back-up, but legislators on both sides can't reach an agreement.
