High Court Ruling Limits EPA Regulations

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled to limit the Environmental Protection Agency's overreaching global warming regulations.

Monday's ruling said the EPA lacks authority in some cases to force companies to evaluate ways to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and it has taken too much authority into its own hands without congressional approval.

Specifically, the justices' decision places limits on the program that deals with power plant and factory emissions of gases blamed for global warming.

"The president has said over and over again that where Congress does not act, he will act unilaterally. The EPA's greenhouse gas permitting scheme is a perfect example of that dangerous philosophy in action," Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott said in a statement.

However, the EPA noted that while the high court placed restrictions on its program, it left the agency's ability to regulate greenhouse gasses intact - something the EPA calls a victory.

"Today is a good day for all supporters of clean air and public health and those concerned with creating a better environment for future generations," the EPA said in a statement.
