President Barack Obama is calling for an end to conversion therapy for young people with unwanted same-sex attraction.

In a statement Wednesday, White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett said the administration supports banning the practice for minors.

Few licensed Christian counselors use that type of therapy anymore as there is little proof that particular method is effective.

But they still want to protect the right to help young people who are seeking freedom from same-sex attraction.

California, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C., have banned conversion therapy for minors. The White House says lawmakers in 18 states are considering banning it as well.
