Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders has officially announced he is running for president in 2016.

The independent, self-described "Democratic socialist" senator said he will seek the Democratic nomination, joining Hillary Clinton in the race for the party's nomination.

The 73-year-old is vowing to fight income inequality.

"What we have seen is that while the average person is working longer hours for lower wages, we have seen a huge increase in income and wealth inequality, which is now reaching obscene levels," Sanders told the Associated Press.

Sanders warns he should not be underestimated, saying his "Democratic socialism" has appealed to Democrats, Republicans and independents for many years in Vermont.

"I've run outside of the two-party system, defeating Democrats and Republicans, taking on big-money candidates and, you know, I think the message that has resonated in Vermont is a message that can resonate all over this country."
