Moore: Ben Carson Isn't Straight Out of 'Vacation Bible School'

In a statement that is sure to rankle evangelicals, Ben Carson said this week that he does not believe in a literal hell.

"I don't believe there is a physical place where people go and are tormented. No. I don't believe that," he told the Washington Post's Sally Quinn.

But Dr. Russell Moore, president of the influential Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, said he's not shocked that Carson doesn't hold to certain evangelical beliefs like the Rapture and a physical place called Hell.

"It didn't surprise me because Ben Carson is a Seventh Day Adventist," he said. "And so what I think is surprising is that we have so many evangelicals who believe that Ben Carson is right out of Vacation Bible School when he's in a particular church that holds to very unorthodox doctrines."
