Investigators say they have uncovered 32,000 emails to and from Lois Lerner, the former IRS official at the heart of the tax agency's Tea Party-targeting scandal.

The IRS inspector general is carrying out a criminal investigation into how the tax agency dealt with Lerner's emails.

But on Thursday night, investigators told the House Oversight Committee they don't know how many of those emails are different from the ones the IRS has already given to Congress.

Several members of the House panel questioned how hard the IRS tried to produce the emails, given how quickly independent investigators were able to find them. The agency originally said they could not be recovered.

"We have been patient. We have asked, we have issued subpoenas, we have held hearings," Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, the committee chairman, said. "It's just shocking me that you start, two weeks later you're able to find the emails."
