Former CBS News investigative reporter Sharyl Attkisson has filed a lawsuit against the Justice Department over the hacking of her computer.

The award-winning journalist is formally accusing the Obama administration of "unauthorized and illegal surveillance of computers and phones."

Attkisson said the intrusion began when she was investigating the "Fast and Furious" gun-walking scandal and the September 11, 2012, terrorist attacks on the American embassy in Benghazi, Libya.

Attkisson spoke about her experience being hacked by Washington, on The 700 Club in November. Watch that interview here:

She said computer forensic tests show hackers covertly monitored her work between 2011 and 2013.

According to Attkisson, there's strong evidence linking the Justice Department to those activities.

"I just think it's important to send a message that people shouldn't be victimized and throw up their hands and think there's nothing they can do and they're powerless," Fox News quoted Attkisson.

"The Justice Department has not been very forthcoming with questions," she said. "The question is, will anybody ever be held responsible?"

So far, the government agency has denied any involvement.

"To our knowledge, the Justice Department has never compromised Ms. Attkisson's computers, or otherwise sought any information from or concerning any telephone, computer, or other media device she may own or use," the agency said in a 2013 statement.
