As a soft-spoken physician who's never held political office, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson is an unlikely presidential candidate. Still, he remains near the front of the pack in a crowded Republican field.

Carson's well-documented life's journey began in Detroit.

As depicted in the movie and book, "Gifted Hands," Carson was raised in poverty by a single mom who taught him that through faith in Jesus Christ and hard work, anything was possible.

Young Ben overcame difficult circumstances to become a world-renown neurosurgeon.

"My life has been truly amazing. I think about it all the time," Carson told CBN News.

When he retired from medicine and began speaking out on important issues facing our country, his admirers and supporters urged him to run for president.

Carson says he wants to make a difference, and he says that starts with understanding the U.S. Constitution.

It's the issue he tackles in his latest book, A More Perfect Union: What We the People Can Do to Reclaim Our Constitutional Liberties.

"I believe that making a difference starts with understanding our amazing founding document, the U.S. Constitution. And as someone who has performed brain surgery thousands of times, I can assure you that the Constitution isn't brain surgery," Carson writes on his website.

"The founders wrote it for ordinary men and women, in clear, precise, simple language," he continued. "They intentionally made it short enough to read in a single sitting and to carry in your pocket."

Dr. Ben Carson talked more about his new book on Friday's edition of The 700 Club. Click play to watch.
