Speaker Boehner: 'Beware of False Prophets'

Outgoing Speaker of the House John Boehner vowed there will be no government shutdown when the money runs out at midnight on Wednesday.

"The Senate is expected to pass a continuing resolution next week," the Ohio lawmer told CBS's "Face the Nation" Sunday. "We'll also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we've seen from abortion clinics that we've seen in several states."

Conservatives have been rallying for a defunding of Planned Parenthood in exchange for legislation to keep the government open.

Boehner also lashed out at conservatives for preventing Republicans, who control both houses of Congress, from succeeding on key agenda items like the repeal of Obamacare.

"They're unrealistic," Boehner said. "The Bible says, 'beware of false prophets.' And there are people out there spreading noise about how much can get done."

Boehner said the House will investigate undercover videos that show Planned Parenthood officials trafficking in fetal body parts.

"We'll also take up a select committee to investigate these horrific videos that we've seen from abortion clinics in several states that really raise questions about the use of federal funds and raise questions about abortion fetuses that are born alive," he said.

Boehner is acknowledging that meeting Pope Francis last Thursday proved to be profoundly moving for him. He also said that it contributed to his decision to resign a few weeks earlier than he originally planned.

House Republicans must now find a new leader, and they have a clear frontrunner: House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy. The California lawmaker was elected to the post in 2014 when Eric Cantor vacated the post after being defeated in a primary election.

Other possible contenders include:  Rep. Jeb Hensarling, R-Texas, chair of the House Financial Services Committee; Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, R-Wash., the Republican conference chair; Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., the House majority whip, and Rep. Raul Labrador, R-Idaho, who challenged McCarthy last year for the majority leader post.
