The Chinese government says missing human rights attorney Gao Zhisheng is currently serving probation.
That reply came in a letter from the Chinese ambassador to several members of the U.S. Senate.
The Senators had inquired about Gao who has been missing since last Feb. 4.
The China Aid Association reports Public Security Bureau officials arrested and tortured Gao in September 2007 because of his human rights activities.
The group suspects government involvement again this time.
Todd Nettleton of the Voice of the Martyrs recently talked to Gary Lane of CBN News about Gao and imprisoned Christian Pastor Shi Weishan.
Nettleton suggests the Chinese government needs to provide more information on Gao's whereabouts.
