Police doubt there's any connection between the murders of two girls at two colleges on the same night.
Lauren Burk was an 18-year-old freshman at Auburn University in Alabama.
She was found shot on a highway near campus and died on the way to the hospital.
Hours later in Chapel Hill, N.C., 22-year-old Eve Carson was also shot dead.
Her body was left on a road near the University of North Carolina campus.
Carson had been the student body president.
Although the schools are seven hours apart, both victims were originally from Georgia.
"I have had my investigators get in touch with authorities there just to cover that avenue, but at this time, there is nothing, absolutely nothing, to indicate the two cases being connected," Assistant Police Chief Tommy Dawson of the Auburn Police Department said.
Auburn police said they're following some promising leads and are close to an arrest in Burk's murder.
Chapel Hill police have no suspects in Carson's case.
