The Bush administration has given the green light to a plan to protect doctors, nurses and other health care workers who refuse to perform abortions due to religious or moral reasons.
The New York Times reports the proposed rule would affect any organization receiving federal funding. They could not discriminate against employees who refuse to perform or assist in abortions or sterlizations.
The Equal Oppportunity Employment Commission is protesting the new rule. EEOC officials say it would overturn 40 years of civil rights law prohibiting job discrimination based on religion.
