A new documentary from a Christian ministry presents an alternative view of climate change as presented by former Vice-President Al Gore's documentary, "An Inconvenient Truth."
"Global Warming: A Scientific and Biblical Expose of Climate Change," is the product of a partnership between Answers in Genesis, the creators of the Creation Museum, and Ft. Lauderdale-based Coral Ridge Ministries.
Answers in Genesis President Ken Ham says the documentary "gives a whole different perspective" to global warming than that presented in Gore's film.
"A lot of scientists we know say there's an incredible amount of misrepresentation and half-truths," in Gore's documentary, Ham said. "We've interviewed specialists, scientists, who look at the issue carefully and haven't let an agenda override the data."
Questions on Carbon-Dioxide
A big difference in the two films is the role carbon-dioxide plays in global warming. Gore's film calls for cuts in carbon-dioxide emissions, while the scientists that Answers in Genesis spoke to said that maintaining carbon dioxide has a miniscule effect on climate change.
Making policy decisions on flawed or politicized interpretations of data can have a devastating impact, according to Ham.
"Reducing carbon dioxide emissions in developing nations can slow down their development. If they can't get the energy they need, it slows down progress and that can impact millions, even billions of people,' he said.
Some Christian leaders who are advocating legislation to reduce carbon dioxide output have "swallowed bad information," Ham said.
He contends that while Christians are called to care for God's creation, it should not come at the expense of mankind, who is made in God's image.
Evangelicals on Climate Change
Climate change has become an important topic in the Christian community. Leading evangelicals have said it belongs on Christians' political agenda, alongside social justice and right to life issues.
The Answers in Genesis DVD looks at the possible negative consequences of basing public policy on questionable science by re-visiting the 1970s best-seller "Silent Spring."
The book claimed that DDT -- a powerful man-made pesticide effective in killing malaria-bearing mosquitoes -- caused cancer and other diseases in humans. The book is credited with bans on DDT, a decision that Answers in Genesis says has allowed malaria to spread unchecked.
