Promise Keepers President Returns

After five years away, former University of Colorado coach Bill McCartney will return to leading the national men's ministry Promise Keepers.

McCartney, 68, co-founded the Christian group in 1990, after he and friend Dave Wardell envisioned a University of Colorado field full of men wanting to be more like Christ. McCartney resigned as president of the organization in 2003 to begin "Road to Jerusalem," a ministry to unite Christians and Messianic Jews.

Since its start less than 20 years ago, the ministry organization has exploded in size. The first Promise Keepers gathering began with 72 men in attendance. By the next year, some 4,200 men attended the first Promise Keepers conference.

By 1997, more than one million men attended the group's "Stand in the Gap" event in Washington, D.C. -- one of the largest gatherings of Christian men in the country

McCartney has already chosen a new president for PK and is working on plans for next year's conference.
