Florida Gov. Charlie Crist says he would approve license plates with the image of a cross and an image of Jesus if the proposal makes it to his desk.
The Florida state senate will vote on the two plates.
One plate shows a cross and the words "I Believe". A similar plate is the subject of a lawsuit in South Carolina.
Florida's American Civil Liberties Union says both plates violate the separation of church and state. Supporters say it is a free speech issue.
"If people don't want one they don't have to buy one," Governor Crist said.
He suggests that the plates would be similar to the national motto "In God We Trust" on U.S. currency.
