Officials: No Armed Guards on Cargo Ships

Ad Feedback

Maritime executives say they don't want armed guards on their cargo ships.

In the wake of the recent pirate attacks, officials have suggested that crews be armed or hire private security firms. However, company executives say that would escalate the situation and wouldn't stop the attacks.

There's also concern that having weapons on board would cause more legal issues for the industry.

Industry analysts say the military should be responsible for cracking down on the larger, so-called mother ships that are sending out smaller teams of pirates to attack cargo ships.
