Facebook Saves a Life with Kidney Donation

Facebook has become much more than just a social Web site for one Iowa man.

John Burge's son used Facebook to find a kidney donor for him.

Burge has a genetic disorder that causes his kidney to shut down and needed a donor who was O Positive.

Now, thanks to a very special stranger, the father will have a new kidney and a new friend for life.

"We had already gone through all of our immediate friends and talked to them, and all my co workers and everyone in the neighborhood and everybody said no," he said.

"We felt like we were at the end," Burge's wife, Katie, added. "We didn't really feel like there was another option,"

"The moment I read the Facebook post, I knew this was something I should do," Facebook donor Nick Etten said.

"That's just it, my father had never met Nick until the day they went in to get their blood tested,"Matthew Burge, the son, said. "I mean...it's Christmas and he is pretty much giving my family the greatest gift we could ever ask for. I can't thank him enough. What he's doing is beyond words."

Burge's donor said he doesn't want anything in return except a Christmas card.

The surgery is scheduled for Friday.
