The U.S Fire Administration is reminding people to be extra cautious this Christmas season.
On average, 40 people a year die and over 250 others are injured during holiday house fires.
A family in Florida is recovering after their Christmas tree caught fire this week. They left their tree lights on when they stepped out of the house for 20 minutes. When they returned, their home was in flames.
Fire officials say it's important to inspect holiday lights each year for frayed wires and excessive kinking. Do not link more than three strands together. And to turn off the lights when going to bed or leaving the house.
