An Ohio school district will likely drop a reference to "belief in God" in two of its policies after threats of a lawsuit.
Lake Local Schools Board of Education members voted to temporarily delete the phrase after legal advisers informed them they would lose any lawsuit to keep it in.
The Freedom from Religion Foundation-- an atheist group-- claimed the references to God in the district's values statement violates the separation of church and state, and vowed to take action.
Despite personal conflicts, board members unanimously favored removing the phrase in a preliminary vote. A final vote is expected Jan. 11.
The change will remove the belief in God phrase, but leave a phrase about valuing religious freedom.
