New York State is now a little closer to a vote on gay marriage.
Today, the state legislature reconvened, giving Queens Democrat Malcolm Smith the top job as Senate Majority Leader. Smith is well-known as a supporter of same-sex marriage.
Three Democratic senators who said they might defect over that issue now have agreed to back Smith. Still, tthere's no word publicly of any deal on the issue.
Statehouse experts acknowledge there are not enough votes right now to legalize same-sex marriage, but they expect those votes could be turned around this year.
