VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- It was called the Rediscovering God in America Event -- Mike Huckabee, Newt Gingrich and Lou Engle were just a few of the big name speakers calling on believers to be salt and light in an increasingly dark world.
Hundreds of believers gathered at Rock Church in Virginia Beach, Va., where former Gov. Huckabee challenged them to get out of the boat -- and stop living comfortable Christian lives.
"If you want to follow Him and be salt and light, your boat has to be in the water, got to be in the water. And you're gonna come back and sometimes you'll be scared up and sometimes they'll be holes in you. That's part of being a boat - God's looking for people who will not be filled with the world, but who will be in it, stirring it up," Huckabee said.
Huckabee said Christians -- not liberals are to blame for the decadent state of our culture...
"I don't think God is holding any of the secular institutions responsible for the decline of our civilization. I believe He holds the salt responsible for not being very salty."
He said the success of Proposition 8 -- the ballot measure that forbids same-sex marriage in California -- is proof that prayer works.
"There's no way in the world ... that there should have been Proposition 8, make it to the ballot, that was the first miracle, and then for it to pass and it happened because there were people like Lou and others on their faces before God who prayed," Huckabee said.
Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich said the straw that broke the camels back for him was when the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals tried to remove the phrase "under God" from the pledge of allegiance.
"You cannot look at America as a secular society and make any sense of our history, so I just thought on behalf of my grandchildren, on behalf of my country, that I was compelled to get back into the arena to take on the secular fanatics who are trying to destroy our relationship with God in American life," Gingrich said.
He challenged Christians to not shrink back in the face of evil.
"Put your faith in God. Seek your courage from God. Recognize that you're never alone and then with the help of your Creator, stand up for that which you know is true and do so fearlessly because in fact God will protect you," he said.
The goal of this event is to ignite people of faith to once again engage the culture and turn America back to God.
"It just breaks my heart that they're trying to take 'one nation under God' out of the pledge of allegiance, our country was built on those values," said Lauren, who attended the event.
WENDY: Do you think prayer events like this really work, do they get results?
SCOTT, attendee: I do. I really do. The Bible says, "If my people, who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face, then, I will heal their land." And I really do believe that, every word of it!
Lou Engle, founder of "The Call" movement -- says the church is the only hope for America and encouraged people of all ages to engage the culture for good.
"We want Christ to rule over us and when we do, then we are seated with Him in heavenly places and He releases His authority and the gates of hell will not prevail against it," Engle said.
