Talk show host David Letterman has apologized to Alaska governor Sarah Palin for a joke he made about one of her young daughters becoming pregnant.

Palin had accused Letterman of contributing to the sexual exploitation of minors in America.

But after the controversy started, Letterman tried to explain it away.

He claimed he was joking about Palin's 18-year-old daughter Bristol, not her underage 14-year-old daughter Willow.

On Monday's edition of  The Late Show, Letterman finally apologized for his risque joke.

"I would like to apologize, especially to the two daughters involved, Birstol and Willow, and also to the governor and her family," he said.

CBS executives say they had nothing to do with the apology, and that it had nothing to do with one sponsor pulling its ads from the show.
