Vermont's senate takes up the issue of same-sex marriage today after a state senate committee unanimously approved a bill permitting in that state.

The panel rejected an effort to put the issue on the state ballot and let voters decide.

Both houses of the state legislature are expected to pass the measure.

However, Vermont's Republican governor says he opposes same-sex marriage.
