The Florida state legislature voted down a bill that would have allowed two new religiously themed license plates.

Religion News Service reports the idea came under harsh criticism from Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the American Civil Liberties Union.

Florida governor Charlie Crist earlier said he would support the plate if the bill passed.
