A Christian legal group is challenging the state's definition of gender.

California's updated education code forbids gender-based discrimination.

It defines gender as including "a person's gender identity and gender related appearance and behavior whether or not stereotypically associated with the person's assigned sex at birth."

The Christian group, Advocates for Faith and Freedom, took on the state in a court hearing.

They say the state is not just trying to create a gender neutral environment but to disregard the traditional family.
