The Fort Hood shooting suspect is now awake, breathing on his own and able to talk, as more information about his Muslim background and possible ties to terrorists emerges.

ABC News reported U.S. intelligence agencies were aware months ago that Maj. Nadal Malik Hasan was attempting to make contact with al Qaeda.

The Army psychiatrist also worshipped at the same mosque as two of the Sept. 11 hijackers.

The London Daily Telegraph also reported Hasan allegedly gave a lecture to other doctors saying non-Muslims should be beheaded and have boiling oil poured down their throats.

For a unique perspective on Hasan's Muslim background, CBN News spoke with former Islamic militant, Dr. Tawfik Hamid.

He now speaks out against Islamic radicalism and is author of the book, Inside Jihad.

Was this an act of Islamic terrorism? Is it possible there are other Islamic radicals in the U.S. military? Click play for Hamid's insight.
