The majority of registered voters would favor Republicans over Democrats if the 2010 Congressional elections were held today, a new survey revealed.
The Gallup poll released Wednesday found that 48 percent of voters said they would back a Republican while only 44 percent would support a Democrat.
Independent voters overwhelmingly supported the GOP with 52 percent voting Republican and only 30 percent backing Democrats.
Political analysts point to the lack in economic recovery-- especially unemployment-- as the leading reason for the gain in Republican support.
If this pattern continues, Gallup said Democrats would have "slim" prospects for a good showing in the 2010 mid-term election and a "likely strong Republican showing."
