The College of William and Mary has a new homecoming queen that is not female, but transgender.
Jesse Vasold was crowned last weekend at the school's homecoming football game against James Madison University.
The Virginia Gazette reported that Vasold wanted people to use "gender neutral" pronouns when referring to him. He said people should use the word "Ze" instead of he or she and the word "Zer" instead of him or her.
Jesse is a member of the campus Organization for Homosexuals and Transgenders. He also helped bring a sex workers art show to campus.
William & Mary President Taylor Reveley said a transgender homecoming queen is just fine. Vasold was nominated and elected by students and will represent the class of 2011.
"William and Mary is a diverse and inclusive community, and student selections to this year's Homecoming Court reflect that," school spokesman Brian Whitson said in an e-mail.
