The violent crime rate in the United States remained unchanged from 2007 to 2008. It is the lowest crime rate since 1973.
The Justice Deparment announced the findings in a newly released report.
An estimated 4.9 million violent crimes were committed in the U.S. last year.
Investigators who published the report found the rate of violent crime in 2008 was 19.3 victimizations per 1,000 people aged 12 or older -- that's unchanged from the previous year.
Property crime rates fell from 147 crimes per 1,000 households in 2007 -- to 135 crimes per 1,000 households in 2008.
