A new poll reveals more Americans have an unfavorable view of the Islamic faith.
The Pew Research Center poll shows that 38 percent of Americans view Islam in a bad light, while 30 percent have a good opinion of the religion.
The statistics differ from 2005, when 41 percent had a favorable opinion.
The survey also showed that about 42 percent of Americans believe Islam is not more likely to incite violence than other religions.
Meanwhile, about half of those surveyed said they oppose building a mosque near New York City's Ground Zero. One third were in favor of it.
The Pew survey, conducted Aug. 19-22, was based on landline and cell phone interviews with 1,003 randomly selected adults. There was a sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points.
