A Florida church is using unique art to reach young people this holiday season.
Keith Goodson is the artist behind a massive 12 by 36 foot oil painting inside the Champions Church sanctuary in Winter Haven, Fla.
Soon, the biblical mural will serve as a backdrop for the church's new cultural center, where young people will come to learn the arts.
The message in the mural is the birth of Jesus Christ.
"This is a one of a kind and definitely designed for a particular unveiling," Champions Church pastor Nolan Edwards explained.
"Back in the old days in the barouche time, people traveled from all over to see something like this. And this is something of that scale," he continued. "It is a very special piece."
Goodson has been painting for more than 20 years and is known for his large works of art. He said the inspiration behind his work is rooted in his childhood faith.
"It used to be a selfish thing, you know. Self promotion -- who can be the best artist, who can do it better," Goodson said. "But now it is more of a passion to tell a story, or to bring my faith into canvas. Sort of a sermon on canvas, if you would."
The church will also take the piece on the road with Goodson. His mission is to bring the nativity to life, long after Christmas Day.
"What makes it unique about this is the fact that when you look at it, you are a participant and you bring your light and you come (to) that very moment that Christ was born," Goodson said. "And you recognize that even though it was 2,000 years ago, it is still an eternal flame (that) burns in everyone, to come back and revisit that time period."
With his latest work complete, Goodson said he is ready to begin the next. And he will have some help from the young people he is planning to teach soon at the church's art center.
